January Detox For Your Skin

A new year presents a blank new slate and it's the perfect time to reset your routine, your diet and your skincare if you've been feeling sluggish and not at your best. 

Switching to cleaner skincare products can seem like a daunting task (which is why I always recommend to start slow!) and is made worse by the fact that lots of people who switch experience breakouts.  

A few breakouts is completely normal however, and when you understand the mechanics behind what's actually going on, and that the breakouts aren't setting up permanent residence, it all becomes less scary. 

Treating your skin to a January detox might be the thing to help kick-start, or continue, your wellness journey and here are a few tips to keep in mind when you do.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN SWITCHING TO NATURAL SKINCARE

When using products that contain synthetic chemicals, PEGs (polyethylene glycol) and all-around unpleasant ingredients the skin will store toxins that accumulate through low-dose chemical exposure.

Once you transition to a credible and well-crafted natural product there comes a period of transition where the skin begins to detox and purge out those stored toxins.

What does that mean?

You might see a few localized breakouts during the first month while your skin tries to get rid of impurities, cell buildup, toxins and bacteria – but not to worry!

Your skin renews itself every 28 days so these problematic spots will diminish likely after a month. Patience is key here and we promise you it’ll be worth it. Going through a month of a skin detox will reveal healthier, happier skin.

A skin detox should not be confused with an actual reaction to a product, however. If you experience redness, itching or swelling within 24 hours of using a product then you are having a reaction and should discontinue use.

Never forget that your skin is your largest organ. It’s constantly working to repair and protect itself.

Honour your skin by giving it the time it needs to heal - just like you would when you have a cut or bruise. The skin must go through a transition period in order to recognize and accept the ingredients from nature that are designed to help your skin thrive and that work in harmony with - and not against - its biological functions.
